Flash crashes in 10.1.102 / 10.1.103

Please report if flash has crashed while trying to play a video. We’ve seen a bunch of people with Flash 10.1.102 and 10.1.103 reporting problems.

I believe we have located 2 ways to fix this problem:

  1. Disable hardware acceleration in Adobe Flash
    • Go to any Adobe Flash element (Example)
    • Right-click on the element
    • Select “Settings”
    • Un-check mark “Enable hardware acceleration”
    • Click “Close”
  2. Upgrade your Graphics Card drivers.
    • Instructions vary by Graphics Card type

Edit: #1 is the quick fix but #2 would be the more permanent fix which I would recommend doing if possible.

I’ve been having a lot of problems the last two weeks. When Flash doesn’t stop streaming in the middle of the episode, I have to reload the page lots of times for it to start streaming. Sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes or even 25 reloads to start the episode.
My Flash’s version is running under Windows 7 32b. Tried with IE, F.Fox & Chrome same thing for all.

Hope it helps you guys a little.

Thanks for the great work!

OK. It was working better till 11/30/10. Now the problem is back again and I have to refresh the page more than 25 times sometimes to get it working. :(

Today after trying all the suggestions here, finally the one that worked out for me was to turn off the Flash hardware accelerator. It is working great now. I didn’t have to reload the page even 1 time. Thanks all for the suggestions. Happy Holidays!

After reporting your issues here, I would suggest installing the preview release of Adobe Flash 10.2 (Square) as a temporary fix.

Though, as with any unofficial release, you will need to completely uninstall it before installing a new stable release, later on. So please keep that in mind. Proper instructions for completely uninstalling Adobe Flash can be found in the link below.

Noticed that problems seem to occur only while trying to watch late episodes from any series, got no or less problems with older episodes.

And seems to work quite fine with IE, problems with FF.

Hope that helps someone.

Same issues here with Flash version (videos crashing regularly) on Firefox.

The Flash “Square” player that BasouKazuma mentioned isn’t a new version per se, rather it’s the preview release version of 64-bit Flash. so not exactly stable (although my experience with it in Linux is much better than the Linux 32-bit versions).

For what it’s worth, restarting the browser usually does the trick for me (instead of just continuously refresh the page).

What a peculiar problem!

On my husband’s computer (with Firefox and Vista) Crunchyroll works fine. On my laptop (with Ubuntu and Firefox) Crunchyroll works fine. All with latest versions of everything.

But on MY computer with Windows 7 (64 Bit) and the latest Flash ( I get a crash every time I start a video in Crunchyroll using either IE (8.0.76) or Firefox (3.6.12). And it’s ONLY Crunchyroll that has this problem. All the other websites with Flash work fine.

I attempted to install Adobe Flash 10.2 (Square). As far as I know I did install it. But everything kept saying I needed a newer version to play videos. It was like I had no Flash installed at all. So that was no good for me.

This problem is a recent one, as Vyse05 says. It’s very odd that it works fine on Vista and Ubuntu but not my computer. It makes me wonder if there was a recent change on someone’s part (Crunchyroll or Adobe) that’s causing this conflict. Hm!

Anyway, with Flash this was the crash message I got in IE. Hope this helps some:

IE crash message is this:

PS: I use Avira Antivirus and Adblock is turned off and this happens whether signed in or not. Dunno if that matters.

how can you disable hardware acceleration in adobe flash when you cant get to the setting menu because the plugin has crashed. when you go adobe and test the flash player , no animation starts so you cant get to the contest menu

I did everything suggested above except diable hardware acceleration in adobe flash because I cant get there , do to flash crashing at the adobe site. Flash works perfectly in internet explorer. I did not have this problem with 43.0.4 but upgraded to 44 and this happened

It is unbelievable to me that Firefox has had the same problem for literally years (I noticed it back in 2020) and that the Mozilla team has not come up with a permanent solution. I have been through the list of “try this, try that” many, many times, and none of them work. My browser crashes approximately 10 times per day. It’s always the same: Adobe Flash causes it to crash.

I don’t understand why this isn’t the highest priority for the development team. It makes Firefox absolute torture to use.

I just started suffering from this problem late last week. There have been indications for about the past four weeks that something weird was going on involving Flash, but it was never bad enough to lock the browser up. As of last Friday, I can’t run Firefox with Adobe Flash installed. So I got rid of Flash but that presents another set of problems on a lot of websites.

Chrome improves Flash sandboxing for Windows: 20 percent fewer crashes

With some fine-tuning in the way it sandboxes Flash, Google says that Chrome crashes have dropped significantly.

Google has improved Flash sandboxing in the latest version of its Chrome browser for Windows, boosting its security and reducing crashes by as much as 20 percent.

The change also means Windows 8 users will be able to use all of a Web site’s Flash features in the mode formerly known as Metro .

By sandboxing Flash, a plug-in can crash without taking down the rest of the browser. Sandboxing was introduced in early versions of Chrome to prevent rogue tabs from causing such total browser crashes, and as an anti-malware measure.

Google ported Flash off the aging NPAPI architecture — which it describes as “a thin layer of glue between the web browser and a native application” — and onto its own sandboxed platform, PPAPI. “By eliminating the complexity and legacy code associated with NPAPI we’ve reduced Flash crashes by about 20 percent,” Justin Schuh, a Google software engineer, wrote on the Chromium blog.

Considering 99.9 percent of Chrome users rely on Flash, most of whom are likely to be on Windows, that’s a lot of users a bit less frustrated.

To get the improved sandboxing, Windows users should update to Chrome 21 if they haven’t already, while Linux users will have had access to the new sandbox since Chrome 20. Apple users will see an OS X version shipped “soon,” Schuh said, but did not give a timescale.
